Keller: New Overwatch Heroes Thin Out Cosmetic Coverage
Overwatch's game director says each new hero and map spreads the cosmetic pool thinner, as Blizzard weighs profit-driving skins against neglected heroes.
Overwatch game director Aaron Keller said every new piece of content, including heroes and maps, spreads the pool of cosmetics thinner across the roster, according to pcgamer.com. Keller made the comments in a group interview.
Keller said the team releases two Mythic skins each season. Typically, one goes to a hero expected to drive business support, while the other goes to a hero that has received few skins recently.
He added that the developers want to expand cosmetic output responsibly so they can keep supporting the game going forward.
The developers named Anran, Freyja and Vendetta as recent heroes that have been included in skin collaborations. In recent years, Team 4 has made a clear effort to increase cosmetics for new heroes, with those three appearing in recent skin collabs.
Overwatch has a roster of 54 heroes and counting, and as a free-to-play game it makes most of its money from cosmetics such as bundles and standalone skins.
