Quixel Megascans library becomes free again on Fab, with refunds
Quixel says buyers who paid for Megascans or the Quixel Bundle on or after January 1, 2025 will be refunded to their Epic account balance.
Quixel announced on November 6 that the entire Quixel Megascans asset library is free, with the assets distributed through the company's official marketplace Fab, according to automaton-media.com. Users who bought Quixel Megascans or the Quixel Bundle on or after January 1, 2025 will have their payments refunded to their Epic account balance.
In a social media post cited by the outlet, Quixel said the Fab listings will be updated sequentially, with the process completed by November 12. The company has also revised its terms of use so that Quixel Megaplants and Megascans can be used for AI model training.
From free to paid and back
Epic Games, which owns Quixel and operates Fab and Unreal Engine, acquired the Swedish company in 2019 and offered Megascans free for use inside Unreal Engine only. In 2024, as the new integrated marketplace Fab opened, Epic announced the library would become paid from January 1, 2025.
Users who obtained the library for free before that change kept the right to download it free afterwards. As of 2024, Megascans held more than 17,000 assets, including photorealistic 3D models and textures.
