Samsung to present 8LPU+ 8nm node at IEDM 2026

The second-generation 8nm process promises 12% better performance and 15% lower power, and targets existing Samsung Foundry 8nm customers.

Samsung is scheduled to present its second-generation 8nm process, 8LPU+, at the IEDM 2026 conference, according to a report from the Korean publication Electronic Times.

The node offers 12% better performance, 15% lower power and an 8% smaller area than the current process. Samsung also lists roughly 10% less I/O area and reduced stand-by leakage among the improvements.

According to Electronic Times, 8LPU+ targets existing 8nm customers of Samsung Foundry as well as fabless chipmakers seeking automotive qualification.

The Nintendo Switch 2's T239 processor is manufactured on Samsung's current 8nm node, which makes the foundry's 8nm roadmap relevant to any future Nintendo hardware. A cheaper model, referred to in speculation as a Nintendo Switch 2 Lite, has been discussed as a possible use for a denser or cheaper node, but no such device has been announced.

Existing 8nm hardware

The Switch 2 launched in 2025, just before RAM and SSD component prices rose sharply. Nintendo raised the console's price in September 2026 because of those component costs. A first hardware revision with a removable battery has already reached the market, differing from the launch model only in that respect.
