Crystal Lake Reworks Friday the 13th Opening Kill With a Twist
The Peacock prequel moves the Camp Crystal Lake killings to the 1970s and changes who commits them, per Collider.
The Crystal Lake prequel series reworks the opening kill scene of Friday the 13th, adding a twist that changes the moment, according to Collider. The sequence that opens the 1980 film is being reimagined for the series rather than restaged as written.
In the original film, the story begins in 1958 at Camp Crystal Lake, where counselors Barry and Claudette are killed by an unseen assailant. Crystal Lake moves that setting to the 1970s and recasts the pair: Phoenix Parnevik plays Barry and Danielle Kotch plays Claudette.
The twist concerns the killer. Friday the 13th keeps its assailant hidden until the third act, when Pamela Voorhees, played by Betsy Palmer, is revealed. In Crystal Lake, Linda Cardellini takes the role of Pamela, and the series is described as replacing her with another character at the moment of the opening kill.
Jason appears before the drowning
The series also introduces Jason Voorhees as a child ahead of the drowning incident, with Callum Vinson playing the young character. Brad Caleb Kane created Crystal Lake, which is set before the events of the 1980 film.
Friday the 13th was written by Victor Miller and directed by Sean S. Cunningham. The franchise had been dormant since the 2009 reboot, with a years-long lawsuit recently resolved. Other horror properties have moved to television in the same period, including Chucky and Alien: Earth, while Mike Flanagan's reinterpretation of Carrie was recently released on Prime Video.
