Pakistani Drama 'Dancers' Heads to Busan's Asian Project Market

Eshah Shakeel's coming-of-age film 'Dancers' seeks investors and co-production partners at Busan, with U.K.-based Pink Llama Films backing the project.

Pakistani coming-of-age drama 'Dancers' is being presented at the Asian Project Market, part of the Busan International Film Festival's Asian Contents & Film Market, according to Variety. The team is at the market seeking investors, co-production and festival partners, and sales agents.

Written and directed by Eshah Shakeel, the film follows Paras, who wants to leave Pakistan, and Ramza, who faces a childhood-arranged marriage, in a Punjab town near Lahore. Shakeel trained in contemporary dance and plans to blend it with a Punjabi dance form in the film.

The final script draft and a budget of about $443,000 are locked. U.K.-based Pink Llama Films has committed financing to the project, and the core crew is in place. The first round of auditions for the two leads is complete.

The project was developed at Film Independent's Global Media Makers program, where it was one of 20 scripts chosen from 600 applications. Waseem Mahmood has been attached as executive producer since before the Film Independent fellowship. Last Shot's previous work includes the web series 'Dheet Haddi' and the short film 'Explicit,' both written and directed by Shakeel.
