Daniel Sullivan Retires; Jonathan Kent to Direct Hare's Montauk

Manhattan Theatre Club said Sullivan is stepping back after 55 years in theater, with Kent taking on the world premiere of David Hare's play in 2027.

Daniel Sullivan, a Tony-winning Broadway director, has announced his retirement after a 55-year theater career, Manhattan Theatre Club said. The company also said Jonathan Kent will direct the world premiere of David Hare's Montauk, with Laura Linney starring.

Montauk is scheduled to begin performances on Tuesday, March 30, 2027, and to open on Monday, April 19, 2027, at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, MTC's Broadway venue. Deadline reported the announcement.

Sullivan won the Tony Award in 2001 for directing David Auburn's Proof. He has directed 20 shows for MTC, on Broadway and Off Broadway, and served as the company's Interim Artistic Director during Lynne Meadow's 2007-08 sabbatical. Meadow stepped down as MTC artistic director last year.

Sullivan also directed Hare's Stuff Happens for the Public Theater in 2006. Kent previously served as joint artistic director of the Almeida Theatre from 1990 to 2002, and he and Hare began collaborating on plays by Pirandello, Chekhov, Ibsen and Brecht almost thirty years ago.
