John Cameron Mitchell to Direct Japanese Hedwig in 2027
Ryuhei Maruyama will lead the new Japanese production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, running from February 20 to March 29, 2027.
A new Japanese production of the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been announced for spring 2027, with Ryuhei Maruyama in the lead role and the show's creator, John Cameron Mitchell, writing and directing, according to cinemacafe.net.
The production is scheduled to run from February 20 to March 29, 2027, with performances in Tokyo, Osaka, Miyagi and Kyoto.
Ahead of the announcement, Maruyama traveled to the United States, visiting the site of the Jane Street Theatre in New York, where the show premiered off-Broadway in 1998, and Mitchell's home in New Orleans, where the two met in person for the first time.
Mitchell said he looks forward to coming to Japan this time and working with the Japanese team, and that Tokyo is becoming his second home. Maruyama said he will play Hedwig again after five years, this time under Mitchell's direction.
A long run from off-Broadway to Broadway
Hedwig and the Angry Inch was first staged off-Broadway in 1998 and became a long-running hit. In 2001 it was made into a film directed by and starring Mitchell, which won the audience award and directing award at the Sundance Film Festival. The show reached Broadway in 2014 and won four Tony Awards, and Mitchell again played the title role in 2015, the year he received a special Tony Award. In the 2022 Japanese production, Mitchell directed and Maruyama starred, but Mitchell could not travel to Japan because of the coronavirus pandemic and the two worked together online.
