James Gunn Reveals Darker Alternate Ending for The Suicide Squad
James Gunn said an early draft of The Suicide Squad had Amanda Waller kill Ratcatcher II, prompting Bloodsport to shoot Waller.
James Gunn has revealed that an early draft of The Suicide Squad featured a darker ending in which Amanda Waller kills Ratcatcher II, according to comingsoon.net. The filmmaker discussed the alternate version on the DC Studios podcast The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?
In that version, Waller shoots Ratcatcher II after the character obtains files about secret experiments involving the US government and the island of Corto Maltese. Bloodsport then shoots Waller in response.
Gunn described the alternate ending as too dark for the film. The released version of The Suicide Squad takes a different path, with Bloodsport blackmailing Waller using the files rather than killing her.
How the released film ends
In the finished film, Rick Flag attempts to leak a hard drive, but Peacemaker kills him on Waller's orders. Ratcatcher II later summons thousands of rats to defeat the alien creature Sterro, while Polka-Dot Man dies during the mission.
The Suicide Squad was written and directed by Gunn, who is now co-chairman of DC Studios.
