Gunn: The Suicide Squad Is First Canon DCU Film, With One Harley Quinn Caveat
The director said on his podcast that the 2021 film now counts as DCU canon, though Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn future remains unresolved.
James Gunn said on his podcast, The Suicide Squad: Is it Canon?, that The Suicide Squad is the first canon film in the DCU, with a small exception concerning the future of Harley Quinn. The DC Studios co-CEO and director of the film made the statement on the show, according to gamesradar.com.
Gunn said the movie fits into canon more easily than Peacemaker season 1 does, and invited fans to watch The Suicide Squad on HBO Max.
On Harley Quinn, Gunn said he does not know whether Margot Robbie wants to play the character again, and that he might cast someone else if she does not.
Gunn has previously described Blue Beetle as the first DCU character and Superman as the first DCU film. He has also said The Suicide Squad introduces Peacemaker and includes the death of Rick Flag Jr., which sets up Rick Flag Sr.'s storyline in Peacemaker season 2 and beyond.
Man of Tomorrow is the next DCU movie, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
