Jennifer Lawrence Confirms Katniss Return, Woody Harrelson Back for Sunrise on the Reaping
Lawrence discussed reprising Katniss Everdeen after 11 years on the Call Her Daddy podcast and said Woody Harrelson will return as Haymitch.
Jennifer Lawrence spoke publicly for the first time about playing Katniss Everdeen again after 11 years, discussing her return in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She also revealed that Woody Harrelson will return as Haymitch Abernathy.
Lawrence described the experience of stepping back into the role as unbelievable, crazy and beautiful, and noted that she was working with the same crew as before. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on November 20 from Lionsgate.
The prequel centers on a young Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games.
Old territory, new story
Variety previously reported that Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson would return as Katniss and Peeta for a scene in the prequel. Lawrence told Variety in 2023, during the press tour for No Hard Feelings, that she was open to reprising the role.
She headlined four Hunger Games movies between 2012 and 2015. The franchise also includes the 2023 prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, led by Rachel Zegler, and has grossed $3.3 billion worldwide to date.
