Laika, Fathom Say They Took Legal Action Over Bruin's Wildwood Screenings

The companies said they had no confirmation that screenings had stopped, and the Bruin's website still listed four daily showtimes for Wildwood.

Laika and Fathom Entertainment said they have taken legal action to stop the Bruin Theatre from screening Wildwood, IndieWire reported. The animation studio and its theatrical distribution partner did not specify what kind of legal action they took.

The companies said they had not received confirmation that the screenings had stopped. Screenings continued at the Bruin through at least the afternoon of October 25, and the theatre's website still listed daily Wildwood showtimes at 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Bruin operator Rui Pereira denied the reporting in a phone call and an email to IndieWire. The Bruin Theatre reopened on Friday, October 23.

Earlier troubles at the Bruin

The Bruin had been dark since July 2024, when Regency Theatres departed the space. On September 3, IndieWire published an investigation into Pereira's operation of Toronto's Kingsway Theatre, and in an August 23 report, The Hollywood Reporter asked Pereira about specific Kingsway posts, including one telling a target to go back to Poland and another describing a swastika painted on a Jewish family's home. Two volunteers left the Bruin restoration project in August after posts attributed to the Kingsway account circulated among moviegoers.
