Lanterns Episode 7 Title Hints at True Detective's Carcosa

DC Studios' Lanterns has always worn its True Detective influences on its sleeve. Co-head Peter Safran said as much at a 2023 event, describing the series as being in the vein of the acclaimed crime drama. Now, with Episode 7 titled "The Jordan Boys Legacy," those parallels are becoming impossible to ignore.

In the episode, Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart step through a portal onto a mysterious yellow-hued world. That planet is the home world of Paul Ben-Victor's character Antaan, whose people were wiped out by the Lanterns villain known as the Manhunter.

The yellow-hued setting immediately brings to mind Carcosa, the fictional city referenced heavily in True Detective Season 1. But Carcosa's roots go back much further than Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's investigation. The city first appeared in Ambrose Bierce's 1886 short story "An Inhabitant of Carcosa," then was used by Robert W. Chambers in short stories for his 1895 book The King in Yellow.

Whether Lanterns is directly pulling from that literary lineage or simply evoking the same eerie atmosphere, the visual and thematic nod is clear. As slashfilm.com noted, the episode's title and setting suggest the series is leaning further into its dark, detective-inspired roots.
