Making Marie Antoinette, a documentary assembled from set footage shot by Eleanor Coppola, will be released in theaters on October 23 on Mubi, according to Variety.
The film marks the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette, the Kirsten Dunst-led feature directed by Sofia Coppola. Sofia Coppola edited the documentary from footage her mother shot during production, after Eleanor Coppola's death in 2024. Eleanor Coppola's diary observations are read in voice-over by Diane Lane.
The documentary was shown at the New York Film Festival, where Marie Antoinette had also screened before the documentary's presentation.
A family record of a film set
Eleanor Coppola's documentary work dates back to Hearts of Darkness, her 1991 film about the making of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. During the COVID pandemic she mentioned wanting to do something with the footage she had shot in France.
Lane, who narrates the diary passages, starred in Paris Can Wait, Eleanor Coppola's 2016 feature directorial debut. Milena Canonero, the costume designer on Marie Antoinette, won one of her four Oscars for that film's costumes, while Sofia Coppola won an Oscar for writing Lost in Translation.
