Spain's Merci Market Draws 215 Professionals as Box Office Rises 45%

The sixth Merci market ran Oct. 28-30 at Valladolid's Broadway cinemas, with buyers following 26 Spanish theatrical titles slated for late 2026 to mid-2027.

The sixth edition of the Merci market drew an estimated 215 professionals to Valladolid's Broadway cinemas from Oct. 28 to 30, up from 190 the previous year, according to Variety. The event is organized by the Valladolid Film Festival (Seminci) and Adicine.

Rentrak figures presented at Merci showed that Adicine members' box office receipts rose 45% through September. Elastica Films' "La Bola Negra," released on Sept. 25, has added to that momentum with a blockbuster theatrical run.

Buyers at the market followed a slate of 26 films set for Spanish theatrical release between late 2026 and mid-2027. Representatives from RTVE, Movistar Plus, Filmin and HBO attended, alongside regional public broadcasters including first-time participant ETB Basque television.

The roundtable lineup included Miguel Morales of Wanda Visión, Mercedes Gamero, CEO of Beta Fiction Spain, Eva Rekettyei, programming director at Cines Yelmo, Íñigo Trojaola, editorial director at Movistar Plus, Octavio Alzola, programming and marketing director at Cines Renoir, and José Antonio de Luna, COO and co-founder of Filmin.

This was Merci's first edition since former Seminci director José Luis Cienfuegos died in December 2025, as noted by Variety. Merci market coordinator Olimpia Pont Cháfer oversaw the event.
