Michael Dougherty Restores 'Season's Greetings' in 4K for 30th Anniversary
Origins Archival scanned every frame from the original 16mm print, and composer Evan Chen created a new 5.1 track for the short's anniversary release.
Michael Dougherty has completed a 4K restoration of his short film Season's Greetings for its 30th anniversary, according to Variety. The director also commissioned a series of Sam short films to be released on the character's official Instagram page.
Origins Archival handled the restoration, scanning every frame from the original 16mm print. Evan Chen, the short's original composer and sound designer, created a 5.1 track for the new version.
Dougherty hand-drew Season's Greetings as his senior thesis film at NYU from 1995 into 1996, shooting it on 16mm film. The project introduced Sam, who went on to become a fixture of the filmmaker's Halloween work.
In 2007, Sam appeared as an integral part of Dougherty's anthology film Trick 'r Treat. A graphic novel titled Trick 'r Treat: Witching Hours has just been released.
A feature script still waiting
Dougherty has a script for another Trick 'r Treat film that would cost roughly $20 million, a figure he says has deterred financiers.
