The Mosquito Bowl Premieres at AFI Fest as Pat McAfee Makes Acting Debut
Director Peter Berg said McAfee trained at Parris Island for a week and received secret coaching from Bradley Cooper before the film opens October 30.
“The Mosquito Bowl” premiered at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on Thursday, where sports personality Pat McAfee discussed his first acting role in the film, according to hollywoodreporter.com. McAfee plays a Marines drill instructor in the drama.
McAfee trained for a week at the Marine Corps recruit training site in Parris Island, South Carolina, to prepare for the part. Director Peter Berg said McAfee also received secret acting coaching from Bradley Cooper and sought advice from Tom Cruise.
According to the background given, the project traces back to a book by Buzz Bissinger, published in 2022 as “The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II.” Berg and Bissinger had previously worked together when Berg adapted Bissinger's book “Friday Night Lights” for television.
McAfee credited an earlier television appearance with building Hollywood interest around the time of casting: in 2024, Timothée Chalamet appeared on College GameDay, which McAfee said drew attention at that moment.
The film opens in theaters on October 30 and begins streaming on Netflix on November 25. The cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgard, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis, and Ari Emanuel encouraged McAfee to pursue acting.
