Netflix Orders Two Seasons of A24 Thriller 'The Apology' Starring Gwyneth Paltrow

Netflix has given a two-season straight-to-series order to the thriller drama The Apology, from A24 and A24-based studio Cut To, according to Deadline. Gwyneth Paltrow stars in the project, marking her first major television role.

Thomas Vinterberg directs The Apology, his U.S. television directing debut. Joe Murtagh wrote the series and serves as showrunner; Murtagh previously created the 2023 series The Woman In the Wall. Executive producers include Paltrow, Vinterberg, Murtagh and Cut To's Hipps.

The series follows Evelyn (Paltrow) and Caleb Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years earlier in a cold case. When the confessed killer may receive a reduced sentence, the couple take matters into their own hands.

Netflix acquired the project preemptively and declined to comment, Deadline reported.

Production context

The pickup comes after a recent Thursday shakeup at Netflix in which Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria was replaced by Peter Rice, who is not officially starting until the following Monday. Netflix also laid off some 1,000 people in the run-up to the order.

Since Cut To launched two years ago, Hipps has landed four straight-to-series orders for A24, including Discretion with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning at Paramount+, Trigger Point with Joel Edgerton at Netflix, and an espionage thriller starring Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour from Jack Thorne at Netflix. In 2011, Netflix announced itself as an original programming player with a two-season straight-to-series order for House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey.
