Researcher Finds Patrick Stewart Photo Hidden in TNG Ready Room Book
Jörg Hillebrand showed that a picture of a young, bearded Patrick Stewart in a 1968 Royal Shakespeare Company production appears on pages 354 and 355 of a book in Captain Picard's ready room.
Star Trek researcher Jörg Hillebrand has demonstrated that a photograph of Patrick Stewart appears on-screen in Star Trek: The Next Generation, according to screenrant.com. The image sits inside a book displayed in Captain Picard's ready room.
Hillebrand published social media posts showing that the photo is a young, bearded Stewart playing Touchstone in the 1968 Royal Shakespeare Company production of As You Like It. It appears on pages 354 and 355 of Volume I of The Annotated Shakespeare.
The double-page spread is visible in four episodes of the series: QPid, Silicon Avatar, True Q and Descent, Part I. According to Hillebrand, Stewart is the only Star Trek actor to be part of official canon. Hillebrand worked on Star Trek: Picard season 3.
The book itself changed over the course of the series. The Globe Illustrated Shakespeare: The Complete Works appeared in The Next Generation, and Q threw it at Captain Picard in the season 1 episode Hide & Q; later episodes used The Annotated Shakespeare instead.
Shakespeare has been part of the franchise since the first season of Star Trek: The Original Series, in the episode The Conscience of the King. Stewart, a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, set the tone for the Shakespearean style of dialogue across Rick Berman's era of the franchise from 1987 to 2005. Stewart died on October 26, 2026, at 86.
