Qiu Jiongjiong's 'Fuxi' Competes at Tokyo Film Festival

The Leshan-dialect film, Qiu's first with professional actors, stars Lee Kang-sheng as two elderly women and Lee Hong-chi as Su Dongpo.

Qiu Jiongjiong's film 'Fuxi: Four Tales of Feasting' is competing at the Tokyo International Film Festival, according to Variety. The film connects four eras through food and shared meals, with each chapter using its own fantastical vocabulary.

The entire film is spoken in the Leshan dialect of Sichuan province. It marks Qiu's first time working with professional actors.

Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng plays two elderly women from different eras, including a dying grandmother in the prehistoric chapter. Fellow Taiwanese actor Lee Hong-chi plays the Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo.

Qiu began shaping the film during the pandemic, when people felt an urgent desire to gather around a table. His previous feature, 'A New Old Play', focused on an individual's personal history.

His solo exhibition 'Qiu Jiongjiong: Fuxi: A Feast for the Universe' runs at Chengdu's A4 Art Museum through Jan. 31. Lee Kang-sheng has just wrapped filming on Argentine director Iván Fund's science-fiction film 'Bodies of Summer'.
