Sam Heughan hints at role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

The Outlander actor said he may have been in New Zealand recently, matching the film's reported production schedule, but his casting is not confirmed.

Sam Heughan has hinted that he may be involved in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, according to screenrant.com. Speaking at a recent event for the Wigtown Book Festival, the Outlander actor said he was not giving anything away, but noted that he may have been in New Zealand recently, which lines up with the movie's reported production schedule.

Heughan's casting has not been confirmed, and there is no word on which character he could be portraying.

The film, directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum, is set for release on December 17, 2027. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Zane Weiner serve as producers.

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit was released in 1937, followed by The Lord of the Rings trilogy between 1954 and 1955. Jackson's live-action adaptations grossed nearly $3 billion and won 17 Academy Awards, while a fan film directed by Chris Bouchard about the same journey was released in 2009. The new movie has been in production around New Zealand while being kept under wraps.
