Sanfic Unveils 9 Chilean Films for Chile Film Competition
Sanfic's 22nd edition selects nine Chilean films for its Chile Film Competition, including the late Antonio Caro's final documentary 'Monguen'.
Sanfic, the Santiago Film Festival, has announced the nine Chilean films that will screen in its Chile Film Competition at the festival's 22nd edition. The selected titles will compete for cash prizes in the best film, director and actor categories.
Four of the nine competing films are debut features, including 'Erratics' by Thomas Woodroffe. The lineup also includes 'Monguen,' the final film by documentary filmmaker Antonio Caro, who died unexpectedly a few weeks ago.
The other nine sections of the festival will be announced on Oct. 20. Sanfic runs Nov. 2 – 6 in Santiago de Chile.
Industry Pressure Behind the Lineup
The announcement arrives amid a challenging funding landscape for Chilean cinema. In October 2025, Chile's 2026-2027 industry catalog reported a 20.5% surge compared to the last season and was unveiled at the San Sebastián Festival, where eight Chilean titles screened across seven sections.
President Jose Antonio Kast took office in March and announced upcoming cuts to the Ministry of Culture and competitive arts funds. The Audiovisual Investment Support Fund drops from approximately $586,000 (540 million pesos) in 2026 to $208,000 (192 million pesos) in 2027, a 64% reduction.
