Skydance Co-CEO Kreiz: Too Early to Discuss Barbie 2 Greenlight
Ynon Kreiz said at a press conference after the Skydance-Paramount merger that a Barbie sequel is not yet at the greenlight stage.
At a press conference for the newly merged Skydance and Paramount, Skydance co-CEO Ynon Kreiz said it is too early to discuss a greenlight for Barbie 2, according to Deadline.
Kreiz, formerly the CEO of Mattel, now serves as a co-CEO of Skydance. He did not offer a timeline for a decision on the sequel.
Getting Barbie 2 into development is a priority for Skydance Motion Picture Group chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, who also need to determine the development status of various Warner Bros. projects.
Skydance is inheriting 36 dated Warner Bros. theatrical releases. Among the projects in question is an untitled Baz Luhrmann film reportedly in pre-production, while a new draft is in for a Weapons prequel titled Gladys, which needs a director to make its September 2028 release date.
Barbie's theatrical legacy
The first Barbie movie was the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history, earning $1.44B at the global box office. Before Paramount merged with Warner Bros., there was uncertainty about a sequel's greenlight, with reports that former WBD CEO David Zaslav balked at paying increased fees for the Barbie team of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig, and Noah Baumbach. A first-look deal was made with Baumbach at the Warner Bros. specialty label Clockwork, and the film rights for Barbie were set to revert to Mattel at the end of the year.
