Spacemaker, Barravento Team With Anime Studio Genco

Spacemaker Productions and its Japanese subsidiary Barravento have formed a partnership with the anime studio Genco, the companies said. The deal sets up a framework for the two sides to develop projects together across several formats.

Under the partnership, the companies will explore international co-productions backed by U.S. financing, live-action adaptations of Japanese intellectual property, and original projects from Japanese creators aimed at the U.S. market.

The announcement follows the launch of Spacemaker and Barravento's first project, Eugene Kotylarenko's Vintage Violence, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Cole Sprouse and Kiko Mizuhara and screened in TIFF's Midnight Madness section. WME handles U.S. domestic sales, with Best Friend Forever overseeing international rights.

Barravento is a Tokyo-based subsidiary that Spacemaker founded with producer Hiroto Ogi. Genco is an anime planning and production company whose credits include Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, In This Corner Of The World and the Netflix series Pluto.

Barravento is also developing an English-language remake of Kanteo Shindo's Onibaba. Spacemaker's credits include How to Blow Up A Pipeline, Our Hero, Balthazar, Rotting In The Sun and The Lonely Woman.
