Spider-Man: Brand New Day VFX Chief Details 2,000-Shot Build at View Conference

VFX supervisor Jerome Chen said the Marvel Studios film involved nearly 2,000 shots and a 24-week post-production, with 445 shots delivered in one week.

VFX supervisor Jerome Chen discussed the visual effects production of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" at View Conference in Turin on Wednesday (October 14, 2026), according to Variety. The film involved nearly 2,000 visual effects shots, with post-production running 24 weeks.

Chen described the delivery pressure on the project: about 445 shots were delivered in a single week, and roughly three-quarters of the VFX work was finished in the final six weeks. By comparison, the first film he supervised, in 1999, contained 450 shots in total and took two years to complete.

Most filming took place in the U.K., where Pinewood Studios, London and Glasgow doubled for New York. Preparations began with a scouting trip to New York in December 2024, before Chen received a finished script. For a sequence introducing Spider-Man and a tank, a few words in the script expanded into 11 shots and roughly 52 seconds of footage. A compact helmet-mounted camera rig captured Tom Holland's performance, with a blurry red shape added to suggest the inside of his mask.

Redesigning the Hulk

Chen worked on Mark Ruffalo's Hulk for the first time. The character appears in a more savage, telepathically controlled state, and the team adjusted his proportions, muscular definition, hair color, and the size of his hands and feet. Hulk's arms were lengthened, body fat reduced, hair made grayer, and eye color shifted from green to brown. Full-scale 10-foot Hulk stand-ins were used on set.

A climactic energy wave involving Jean Grey was initially intended to avoid rainbow-like chromatic aberration, but Chen changed course with five weeks remaining. A last-minute review also revealed a sweat stain under Spider-Man's arm, which a small team at Marvel's Burbank offices removed.
