Paramount Pictures has appointed Steven Spielberg to lead creative direction on the next live-action Transformers film, while Michael Bay is in early talks to direct, according to Deadline.
The film would be the eighth live-action installment in the franchise. It is based on a script by Jason Fuchs and is set in modern day.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce alongside Spielberg. Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will also produce.
Spielberg held a similar creative role on the first two Transformers films. The first Transformers film opened in summer 2007, and Bay stepped away from the franchise after the 2017 film Transformers: The Last Knight.
The franchise has generated more than $5.4 billion in global box office revenue.
Studio leadership and script
One of the first meetings new Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg held was with Spielberg to discuss Transformers. Bay read the script and met with Spielberg earlier this week.
