Villeneuve: Dune: Part Three Is a Very Different Movie

Denis Villeneuve told Empire he wanted to be severe with the material rather than complacent, and says the sequel has different pacing. It opens December 18, 2026.

Denis Villeneuve has explained why he returned to Arrakis for Dune: Part Three now rather than years later, telling Empire that he wanted to be severe with the material and not complacent, according to Bleeding Cool.

The director described the film as a very different movie from its predecessor, with different pacing and the same characters in a totally changed world. Dune: Part Three is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium and follows him living with the burden of what he created, drawing on Frank Herbert's Dune: Messiah.

Villeneuve also said that being asked to direct the next James Bond film gave him the push he needed to leave Arrakis behind after Dune: Part Three. He had previously suggested he wanted a break from the franchise before deciding to make the film sooner.

The cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson and Javier Bardem. Villeneuve directs from a screenplay he wrote with Brian K. Vaughan.

Dune: Part Three opens only in theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026.
