Edward Berger Says World War Z Sequel Script Still in Development

The director told Screen Off Script at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival that the team is working hard on the screenplay.

Director Edward Berger said the script for the World War Z sequel is still being worked on and that the team is working hard on it. He spoke to Screen Off Script at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.

Berger said the film could be a big-budget blockbuster if they get the script right, adding that they do not want to disappoint the fans. Dennis Kelly is reportedly writing the screenplay, and plot details for the sequel are under wraps.

The sequel was first announced shortly after the first film's release in 2013, and it was shelved in February 2019 due to budgetary concerns and other issues. In September 2026, the project was revived with a deal closing for Brad Pitt to return and Berger to direct.

Berger's attachment follows a long line of filmmakers linked to the project. J.A. Bayona was initially reported to direct the sequel but exited due to scheduling conflicts, and David Fincher replaced him before the film was shelved.

The first film, directed by Marc Forster and based on Max Brooks' 2006 novel, made $540 million at the box office and became the highest-grossing zombie movie of all time, on a budget of $190–269 million. It holds a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score. China's ban on zombie movies contributed to the sequel being shelved.
