Cregger Says Resident Evil Debate Missed His Story
The director told The Town podcast that comparisons with Capcom's games overshadowed his aim of doing something different with the film.
Director Zach Cregger said on The Town podcast that he was frustrated by how much of the discussion around his Resident Evil film centered on comparisons with Capcom's video games rather than on his own version of the story, according to screenrant.com.
Cregger said most of the debate concerned whether the adaptation would meet the expectations of existing fans, including criticism over the lack of recognizable characters, established lore and changes to the source material.
He said those arguments overshadowed the film's aim of doing something different with the material.
Cregger developed an original story with a new protagonist, a medical courier named Bryan played by Austin Abrams, set within the world of the games rather than adapting an existing storyline. Resident Evil was released on September 18, 2026, and made around $400 million at the worldwide box office.
Cregger previously directed the horror films Barbarian and Weapons. He did not completely rule out returning to Resident Evil.
