Battery fire safety shifts to off-gas sensors and scout robots

Sandia tests showed a VOC sensor reacting 7.1 minutes before thermal runaway, as Korea's Vine Robot inspects battery sites remotely.

The battery industry is widening its fire-safety detection beyond smoke and heat alarms to off-gas sensors and unmanned reconnaissance robots, according to digitaltoday.co.kr, with adoption expected to spread to battery cell factories.

In a test by Sandia National Laboratories, a volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor reacted 7.1 minutes before thermal runaway, and the battery pack cooled without igniting once the current was cut. A research team at Hanyang University is now looking for conditions to detect thermal runaway early in pouch-type batteries that have no safety vents.

On the robotics side, a Vine Robot developed by the National Fire Research Institute of Korea and a KAIST team led by professor Yoo Ji-hwan was deployed at a warehouse in South Chungcheong. The robot enters through rooftop vents and floor gaps and transmits internal temperature, battery deformation and collapse signs in real time.

Standards move ahead of legislation

FM Global revised its lithium-ion energy storage system loss prevention standard in January 2024 to automatically isolate an ESS when cell temperature rises or off-gas is detected, according to TFactory. NFPA 76 requires monitoring devices for electrolyte vapor release before thermal runaway in facilities over 20 kWh with densely packed batteries.

An industry official said companies are proactively advancing their own standards to improve cost-to-risk management efficiency regardless of how quickly legislation moves. Earlier, in August 2026, a fire broke out in the finished product warehouse of a primary battery plant in South Chungcheong holding about 210,000 military battery packs; the National Fire Research Institute said the packs were the same model as those in the June 2024 Aricell factory fire in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, which killed 23 workers.

Quick answers

How early can off-gas sensors detect a battery fire?

In a Sandia National Laboratories test, a VOC sensor reacted 7.1 minutes before thermal runaway, and the pack cooled without igniting once current was cut.

What does the Vine Robot do?

It enters through rooftop vents and floor gaps and transmits internal temperature, battery deformation and collapse signs in real time.

What do current standards require?

FM Global's revised ESS standard, issued in January 2024, calls for automatic isolation when cell temperature rises or off-gas is detected, and NFPA 76 requires monitoring devices in facilities over 20 kWh with densely packed batteries.
