CNN Signs Multi-Year AI Content Deal With Google

CNN will supply content for Google's experimental generative AI features under a paid multi-year agreement, with terms undisclosed.

CNN has signed a multi-year contract with Google to provide its content for experimental generative AI features, and will receive compensation for the use of that content. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Under the arrangement, Google pays for content used in AI-generated article summaries and personalized audio briefings, which include source attribution and links back to the original articles. The company's news AI pilot, launched in 2025, has involved more than 400 media outlets worldwide, including Axios, Financial Times, Forbes, Post and Courier, Texas Tribune and Oil City News, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.

Sam Felix, Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development at CNN, said the contract opens new paths for readers to access CNN's journalism and provides compensation for CNN's intellectual property being provided and used in AI products.

Industry Push for Content Tracking

The deal comes as publishers seek ways to track how their content is used by AI systems. On October 2, the SPUR coalition released an open-source content telemetry standard designed to record when AI systems search, reference, cite or display content, as well as user reactions. The standard alone cannot verify whether content was used in past training data and does not force AI companies to pay usage fees. CNN's contract with Google was made separately from SPUR's standard-setting activities.

David Buttle, co-founder of cybersecurity company SPUR, said publishers and rights holders should control content usage and receive fair compensation. Christine Heitmann, Chief Revenue Officer at AP, described the standard as an important step toward fair and transparent licensing relationships. SPUR has asked Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta to join its advisory board, but it has not yet disclosed whether they will participate.

A 2026 Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism survey of 280 media industry professionals across 51 countries found that 20% expected AI-related revenue to reach significant levels, 49% expected a small contribution and 20% expected no AI-related revenue. Concerns have also been raised that premium content licensing deals may favor well-funded AI companies, leaving smaller developers less able to secure comparable content access. A copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft is ongoing, with the deadline for applications to submit opinions on fair use set for October 16.
