CXMT sends HBM3E samples to Chinese AI chip designers
The DRAM maker plans small-scale HBM3E production within two months even though yields are reported at around 20-30%, Reuters says.
CXMT, China's largest DRAM maker, has sent HBM3E samples to Chinese AI chip design companies and plans to enter small-scale production within two months, Reuters reported on October 28. The company is moving ahead despite low yields, according to the report.
CXMT's HBM3E yield is reportedly around 20 to 30%, compared with about 70% for SK hynix. Because of those low yields, the planned HBM3E is expected to cost more than competitors' products.
The push comes as Chinese AI chip companies face higher memory costs. Last month, Reuters reported that Huawei, Cambricon and other Chinese AI chip firms raised AI chip prices by 20-50% due to memory costs.
CXMT is not yet a major player in high-bandwidth memory. In the second quarter, global HBM revenue share stood at SK hynix 50%, Samsung Electronics 33% and Micron 18%, according to Counterpoint Research. In the same quarter, CXMT ranked fourth worldwide in DRAM revenue share with 10%.
