DoorDash announced on Wednesday that it will introduce text message ordering, launch drone delivery pilots, and expand its retail returns feature across the United States. The company said iOS users in the US can join a waitlist starting today to try text ordering in beta.
The first DoorDash Air drone delivery location will be piloted in an unspecified part of northern California, with local food services including Chipotle and Popeyes. DoorDash says around 80 percent of typical restaurant orders are light and small enough for the aircraft to carry safely, and that food arrives at customers' doors within five minutes based on initial testing.
The returns feature, currently only available in select cities, will be expanded across the US in November. Customers will pay $7.99 to schedule an eligible return.
In June, DoorDash introduced the Ask DoorDash AI chatbot to its app, allowing recommendations and browsing. Yesterday, TikTok announced its own version of a returns feature via UPS.
