Five European Payment Apps Form ENP for Cross-Border Payments
Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY, Vipps MobilePay and Wero will link through a new interoperability layer covering 130 million users.
Five European payment providers have formed the European Network for Payments (ENP), an interoperability layer designed to let their users pay across borders. The five platforms signed a memorandum of understanding earlier in 2026, according to techradar.com.
The scheme brings together Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY, Vipps MobilePay and Wero. Rather than replacing any of the existing services, the ENP will sit between them, connecting their systems so users can transact across markets.
The five platforms together reach 130 million users, a figure the network puts at over 70% of the combined populations of the EU and Norway.
Rollout plan
Deployment will begin with cross-border person-to-person payments, then expand to e-commerce, and finally to in-store physical payments. The ENP aims to have all three payment types implemented by the end of 2027.
In 2022, the European Central Bank said 61% of card transactions in the euro area were handled by international card schemes, while the European Commission has previously pointed to differences in QR code, NFC and Bluetooth standards affecting borderless payments and to the EU's electronic payments market being dominated by a few large global players.
