Firefox 157 Redesign Hits Desktop and Mobile

Mozilla today released Firefox 157, a redesign of its web browser that rolls out across desktop and mobile platforms. The update brings back compact mode and adds more customization options.

In an interview, Mozilla's head of Firefox, Ajit Varma, discussed the browser's market position and product strategy. The redesign arrives as Firefox continues to position itself as an alternative to Chromium-based browsers.

Firefox is built on the open source Gecko engine and serves as a Chromium-free alternative. Google-led Chromium powers Google's Chrome browser, which has majority market share, as well as most competing browsers including Microsoft Edge.

A deal to offer Google search as Firefox's default provides Mozilla with the majority of its revenue, a factor that shapes the browser's competitive landscape.
