A developer known as Bo Made It has demonstrated a Game Boy emulator running at 30 FPS on a Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 e-paper development board. The project was reported by hackaday.com.
The emulator addresses individual pixels through the development board's built-in wavetable e-paper controller. Each pixel is given a budget of up to 8 pulses depending on how much it needs to change, which speeds up the display.
The Game Boy's 4-bit greyscale is achieved by deliberately ghosting the display. The developer is calibrating the timing for each color transition and used video to help automate that process.
No GitHub link exists yet, and the developer will open source everything when it is ready. Bo Made It also plans to use the display driver in a PDA-like device.
