Hyundai Engineering gets steel modular connection certification

Hyundai Engineering obtained technical certification from the Korean Society of Steel Construction for an H-beam modular connection system developed with Hyundai Steel.

Hyundai Engineering has obtained technical certification from the Korean Society of Steel Construction for a steel modular connection technology developed jointly with Hyundai Steel, according to inews24.com.

The certified system is an H-beam steel modular connection structural system used for stacking and assembling box-type modules produced in factories at construction sites. Hyundai Engineering says it can reduce on-site assembly time by more than 20% while securing seismic performance and structural safety.

Instead of built-up square steel tube members, the technology uses standard H-beam off-the-shelf materials as main structural members. A two-direction positioning guide system and horizontal bolt fastening method were introduced to improve on-site workability and safety.

In a full-scale two-story frame cyclic loading test, the structure maintained performance at 4% inter-story drift, exceeding the 2% required by current building structural standards.

Verification and next steps

The technology was applied to the H-Modular Lab test facility jointly established by Hyundai Engineering and Hyundai Steel in November 2024, completing stacked construction verification. Hyundai Engineering plans to expand application of OSC (Off-Site Construction) technology to data center and industrial construction fields.
