IIHS: Level 4 Self-Driving Cars Have 68% Lower Crash Rate

IIHS analysis finds Level 4 autonomous vehicles crash 68% less per distance driven than humans, while Waymo reports 94% fewer serious-injury crashes.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has published an analysis comparing crashes of Level 4 autonomous vehicles with those of human-driven vehicles, finding that the crash rate per distance driven was 68% lower for self-driving cars, according to IEEE Spectrum.

The analysis also found that 22% of crashes involving autonomous vehicles were reportable, and two-thirds of those occurred during driverless operation with no person in the driver's seat.

Waymo reported that its robotaxis, which have accumulated over 200 million miles (about 322 million km) of driverless driving, had 94% fewer crashes involving serious injury or death compared to those caused by human driving.

Tesla robotaxis, by contrast, were reported to have four times as many crashes as human drivers.

In 2023, Waymo released data indicating fully autonomous vehicles had 85% fewer crashes than humans.
