Intel CEO says he has discussed possible cooperation with AMD's Lisa Su
Lip-Bu Tan said talks with AMD CEO Lisa Su took place but did not say what the two chipmakers might build together, according to TechRadar.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said he has discussed potential cooperation with AMD CEO Lisa Su, but did not disclose what the two companies might develop together, according to TechRadar. The remarks were made in an interview conducted by Jimmy Cheng, president of the Chinese American Semiconductor Professional Association.
Tan also said Intel's 18A manufacturing process has entered volume production. On the next node, Intel has released version 0.5 of its 14A process design kit, with version 0.9 expected before version 1.0 becomes available for volume production in early 2027.
The CEO said he is determined to reclaim leadership in CPUs and is modifying Intel's processors to meet customer needs. He added that several customers wanted to expand their businesses through Intel's manufacturing services, without identifying them.
Tan said two or three of Intel's businesses — among ASICs, co-packaged optics, advanced packaging and physical AI — are expected to each contribute roughly 10% of Intel's revenue. No announcement has confirmed that AMD intends to manufacture chips at Intel's foundry.
Shared x86 work predates the talks
In October 2024, Intel and AMD set up the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group with other technology companies to coordinate improvements to their shared processor architecture. AMD has also integrated its ZenDNN optimizations into Intel's open-source oneDNN library for CPU-based PyTorch inference, and the two firms have worked together on Advanced Matrix Extensions and other x86 capabilities.
