Intel hits structural milestone at Ohio fab, targets 2030 completion
Intel has finished installing the first major structural truss at its New Albany, Ohio plant and expects the next Arizona fab to start operating by end-2028.
Intel has completed installation of the first major structural truss at its large semiconductor plant under construction in New Albany, Ohio, and has moved on to the next construction phase, according to digitaltoday.co.kr. The company now targets completion of construction in 2030.
A second plant is planned at the site northeast of Columbus, with a completion target of 2031. No major external customer has yet been confirmed for the Ohio plant.
Naga Chandrasekaran, head of Intel Foundry, said the structural installation is another important step toward expanding advanced semiconductor production capacity in the United States. He also said Intel expects its next Arizona plant to begin operation by the end of 2028.
Long road from the original plan
When Intel first unveiled the Ohio plan in 2022, it said chip shipments would begin in 2025. The project is now at least five years behind that original schedule.
Under former CEO Pat Gelsinger, Intel expanded production sites aggressively. Lip-Bu Tan, who took over management in 2025, slowed the pace of investment commitments pending confirmation of customer demand. Intel was mass-producing its most advanced 18A chips at its Arizona plant at the end of 2025, but those chips have not yet secured a large external customer and are currently used for the company's own device processors.
