Intel Shares Plunge 30% in Record One-Day Loss, Erasing $150 Billion
Intel's weak outlook also helped wipe out about $1 trillion in semiconductor market capitalization, according to intraday estimates by Benzinga.
Intel shares fell 30% in a single trading day after the company issued a weak outlook, erasing roughly $150 billion in market capitalization — the largest single-day loss in the company's history, according to tomshardware.com.
The selloff extended across the semiconductor sector. The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index dropped 9.14%, or 1,052.82 points, to 10,465.38 points as of 2:31 PM ET on Friday. Citing intraday estimates by Benzinga, tomshardware.com reported that about $1 trillion in semiconductor market capitalization was wiped out on the day.
Other chipmakers also declined. Nvidia lost 5.66% of its market value — about $270 billion — despite the smaller percentage decline. AMD fell 12.48%, Arm 12.68% and Qualcomm 12.14%. Dell dropped 12.67%, Oracle 6.88% and Apple 1.66%.
The outlook that triggered the drop included guidance for fourth-quarter revenue of $15–16 billion. Intel also said it expects the client PC market to decline 10% in 2027 compared with 2026. For the third quarter, its Client Computing and Physical AI Group posted $8.1 billion in revenue, down 5% year-over-year.
Intel's market capitalization had peaked at $673.43 billion in mid-June 2026, its highest ever, before falling nearly 50% to $338.91 billion. The company also recorded a $12.5 billion non-cash accounting charge tied to shares issued to the U.S. government.
