Counterpoint: iPhone Duo early supply under 6 million units

Counterpoint Research director Tarun Pathak told CNBC that early demand for Apple's foldable iPhone Duo will exceed supply.

Early supply of Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is estimated at fewer than 6 million units, according to Counterpoint Research, and demand is expected to outstrip that supply. Research director Tarun Pathak made the assessment in an interview with CNBC, as reported by inews24.com.

The iPhone Duo was officially launched on the 23rd. The base model starts at $1,999, while the 2TB model costs more than $3,000.

Counterpoint also forecast that the global foldable smartphone market will grow 24% this year and 37% next year. Cumulative global foldable shipments are expected to surpass 100 million units by the end of this year, the firm said.

Market shares and rival models

Counterpoint expects Samsung Electronics to hold 38% of the foldable market this year and Apple 25%. Huawei's Pura X Max is among the rival foldables in the category.

In the second quarter of this year, sales of clamshell foldables were weak because of the seasonal off-peak period, while book-type foldables held up better, according to the article.
