iPhone Duo hit by 'Crackgate' hinge and inner display defects

Reports say the inner screen can crack while unfolding; Apple has promised free repairs but users cite parts shortages.

New defects affecting the hinge and inner display of the iPhone Duo have been reported, widening the controversy around Apple's first foldable phone, according to techm.kr. Users describe a "Crackgate" phenomenon in which the inner display can crack during unfolding even when resistance is felt while opening the device.

In some cases the display recovers after the phone is closed and reopened. A creaking sound when opening and closing the device is said to usually indicate a problem with the inner display.

Owners reportedly cannot get timely repairs because of parts shortages. Apple has acknowledged that display breakage can occur and promised free repairs, but has not disclosed whether design, manufacturing or materials are the cause.

Teardown findings and pricing

iFixit's teardown found insufficient contraction of the display's central support and an insufficient operating range of the hinge rail. TrendForce assessed that control of hinge travel distance, support height, adhesive precision and assembly tolerances may have failed. Some point to assembly errors by Foxconn, meaning inspection was inadequate, while others claim the hinge material itself is defective.

Korean carrier pricing for the iPhone Duo is 3.3 million won for 256GB, 3.597 million won for 512GB, 4.191 million won for 1TB and 5.093 million won for 2TB. Apple's own website lists 3.29 million won, 3.59 million won, 4.19 million won and 5.09 million won for the same capacities.

In a PhoneArena survey on whether the iPhone Duo will succeed, 39% answered that it will be recorded as a major failure, 41% said it will succeed anyway and 20% were undecided. One month after launch, the product is described as standing at a crossroads between success and failure.
