iPhone HDMI video cuts out on lock screen in iOS 27, users report

GSMArena replicated the bug in YouTube and Netflix, while VLC kept playing on a locked iPhone; iOS 27.2 reportedly does not fix it.

iPhone owners who updated to iOS 27 are reporting that video sent to an external display over HDMI stops playing once the phone is locked, according to GSMArena. The outlet said it reproduced the problem in both YouTube and Netflix.

In GSMArena's tests, VLC continued to play video on a locked screen while the other two apps dropped their HDMI output. The behaviour points to how individual apps handle external display sessions rather than a total failure of the HDMI connection.

iOS 27 introduced a rule requiring apps to explicitly register certain external display video sessions, where earlier versions of the software granted that permission automatically. Apps that have not made the change lose their video output once the device locks.

The HDMI issue was first reported in September alongside the iOS 27 release and, according to GSMArena, is not addressed by iOS 27.2.

Separate storage complaint

A different iOS 27 complaint concerns Apple Intelligence storage, which was reported to occupy about 15GB in some cases, including for users who do not use AI features or live in regions where they are unavailable.
