ITU-R issues revised spectrum monitoring handbook with AI content led by Korea

The revision, the first since 2010, adds AI-based spectrum monitoring, data processing and automated operation to the handbook's scope.

ITU-R (ITU Radiocommunication Sector) has published a revised edition of its spectrum monitoring handbook, the first revision since the 2010 edition. The new edition adds AI-based spectrum monitoring content that was led by Korea, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.

The revision expands the handbook's scope to cover data processing and analysis, system interconnection and automated operation. Its Section 4.5, titled "Process and Analysis", addresses AI-based spectrum monitoring and was led by a Korean rapporteur.

Researchers at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) contributed to structuring the signal processing and AI-based analysis procedures included in the revision. Korea's Central Radio Management Service supported the work through the country's ITU study committee and internal study groups.

The revision was led by Working Party 1C under ITU-R Study Group 1 and received final approval from SG1 in June.

Background

The previous edition of the handbook was the 2010 edition. The need for a revision was raised in 2019, followed by discussions among member states and the drafting and review of each chapter before SG1's approval in June.
