Korea Launches Planning Study for Korean-Style Science Data Lab

The Ministry of Science and ICT and KBSI will define technology areas, equipment standards, and data requirements for the lab by the end of this year.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) have begun a planning study for the construction and spread of a Korean-style science data lab, according to etnews.com. The project is intended to establish open communication standards for laboratory equipment.

Under the study, the two organizations will define required technology areas, the types of equipment to link to those standards, and data decision-making requirements for the Korean-style science data lab. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

The study is aimed at government-funded research institutes, equipment manufacturers, and large companies that require autonomous laboratories.

KBSI also plans to regularly convene a committee whose members include equipment suppliers, companies demanding autonomous labs, government-funded research institutes, universities, and ministry officials.

Earlier Consultative Body

In August, the Ministry of Science and ICT launched an industry-academia-research consultative body for autonomous laboratories. Imported equipment accounts for 85% of South Korea's analytical equipment market.
