Marvell unveils optical memory module, 2027 sampling target
The Photonic Fabric Memory Module pairs 72GB of HBM3e with up to eight DDR5 DIMMs and 7.2Tbps of optical I/O, per a Marvell presentation.
Marvell has shown a Photonic Fabric Memory Module that combines 72GB of HBM3e with slots for up to eight DDR5 DIMMs, a Photonic Fabric ASIC and 7.2Tbps of optical I/O, according to the company's August 2026 Hot Interconnects presentation. Marvell describes it as the first optically interconnected high-capacity, high-bandwidth memory, and says the design is pre-silicon with customer sampling targeted for 2027.
The module is the building block for a larger system. Marvell's Photonic Fabric Memory Appliance joins 16 modules and shares a memory pool across up to 16 hosts. Sixteen modules fully populated with 256GB RDIMMs and linked by a passive all-to-all fiber shuffle yield 32TB of DDR5 alongside 1,152GB of HBM3e.
The technology was shown in a video on X and discussed in a theCUBE interview recorded around Marvell's October 6 Investor Day. In that conversation, Ravi Mahatme, who leads product management for the Photonic Fabric unit, and Will Chu, Marvell EVP of Custom Cloud Solutions, covered the design; Dave Lazovsky commented on the economics of GPU memory.
Shared architecture and a crowded field
Celestial AI presented the same 16-module, 32TB DDR architecture in its 2025 conference slides and presentations. In May 2026, a Marvell company blog claimed lower memory cost per gigabyte and lower inference costs without providing figures.
Nvidia has taken a $2 billion stake in Marvell and is pursuing BlueField-4 STX context memory, Enfabrica pooling technology and a co-packaged optics roadmap. The disclosure comes as server RDIMM prices in the US sit at around 5.5 times their pre-crisis level amid the current memory crunch.
