Microsoft: KB5127648 update can block Smart App Control toggle
Devices on Windows 11 24H2 and later that have Smart App Control turned off may see the setting grayed out, with no fix released yet.
Microsoft has warned that its October KB5127648 security update for Windows 11 may leave Smart App Control grayed out and impossible to enable on some devices, according to bleepingcomputer.com.
The problem affects devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 and later where Smart App Control is currently turned off. In those cases the toggle can appear grayed out, preventing users from switching the feature back on.
Machines where Smart App Control is already enabled are not affected and remain protected, Microsoft said.
No fix is available yet. Microsoft has provided temporary workarounds that involve registry edits or Group Policy for devices managed by an enterprise.
Earlier Windows update problems
In September 2026, Windows security updates caused Always On VPN connection problems, which Microsoft later resolved. Windows 11 updates released since August also caused black screens, desktop loading issues and Explorer crashes, which Microsoft addressed on Tuesday.
