Microsoft previews MAI-Image-2.7, second on Artificial Analysis

The in-house image editing model trails only OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst on Artificial Analysis and ranks third on Image Arena.

Microsoft unveiled a preview version of its in-house image editing model, MAI-Image-2.7, on October 27, the company said. The model scored an Elo of 1193 on Artificial Analysis's image editing leaderboard, placing second, according to aitimes.com.

That put MAI-Image-2.7 above OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Flare (1182) and below OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (1199). On the Image Arena leaderboard, the model took third place in the image editing category, 45 points higher than its predecessor MAI-Image-2.6.

Artificial Analysis evaluated the models across 10 use cases and 7 editing tasks, and the new model outperformed MAI-Image-2.6 in all of them. The largest gains were 57 points in composition and framing, 49 points in text and symbol editing and 48 points in scene and style editing.

The preview is available in Microsoft's MAI Playground and on Image Arena. The current version supports image editing only; text-to-image generation is planned for later.

MAI-Image-2.6, released in August, scored 1151 on Artificial Analysis, 42 points below the new model. The Artificial Analysis ranking is based on blind human preference evaluations.

Microsoft has not disclosed a release schedule or pricing for Microsoft Foundry.
