Modal adopts Nvidia Vera CPU for AI agents after tests double workloads
AI cloud startup Modal is adding Nvidia's Vera CPU alongside Intel and AMD chips, with Nvidia projecting at least $20 billion in Vera revenue this fiscal year.
AI cloud startup Modal has become a customer of Nvidia's central processors, adopting the new Vera CPU to run AI agents after early tests showed it doubled agent workloads, according to Reuters. Until now, Modal ran those workloads only on chips from Intel and AMD.
Switching to the Nvidia chip requires significant software changes, Reuters reported. Modal said it plans to combine Nvidia hardware with its existing Intel and AMD chips, picking whichever hardware suits each task best.
Nvidia has told investors it expects at least $20 billion in Vera chip revenue this fiscal year. OpenAI, Anthropic, Oracle and Perplexity also plan to use Vera chips.
Fundraising and growth
Last week, Modal raised $750 million in a funding round led by Axel at a valuation of $15.75 billion. According to the company, usage of its model service tripled over one year and revenue grew more than 15-fold.
