NASA Opens Bids for Private Space Stations to Succeed ISS
NASA's 360-page request for proposals asks industry to build commercial stations, with responses due December 8.
NASA has released a 360-page request for proposals for privately built and operated space stations, part of its effort to establish commercial successors to the International Space Station as early as 2030.
Industry responses are due back to NASA on December 8, according to Ars Technica. NASA plans to select two or more contractors in this phase of the competition.
NASA intends to make a final decision in April. Winners in this first phase will be guaranteed at least $100 million.
The agency said Phase 2 of the Commercial LEO Destinations competition, kicking off next year, will include funding for development and certification of space stations. Phase 3 will include the purchase of at least four missions for NASA astronauts to the private space stations.
Companies named in the competition include Axiom Space, Voyager Space, Vast Space, Blue Origin and SpaceX, with Jared Isaacman also involved in the effort.
